California requires it. SingerLewak makes it straightforward.
Every California-licensed CPA firm that performs accounting and auditing services must undergo a peer review at least once every three years – and within 18 months of its first such engagement. Selecting the right reviewer makes a real difference.
What’s at Stake
A peer review isn’t just a compliance checkbox. Done well, it’s an opportunity.
Quality
Confirms your firm’s work meets current professional standards, which continue to evolve.
Knowledge
Surfaces best practices and new techniques your team can apply going forward.
Trust
Demonstrates to clients that your firm has passed an independent evaluation and stands behind the quality of its work.
A failed review has real consequences: firms must report results to the California Board of Accountancy within 45 days.
What to Expect
Depending on your practice, your review will be one of two types:
System Review
Evaluates your quality control or quality management system, including testing of selected engagements. Required if your firm performs audits.
Engagement Review
Evaluates selected engagements only. Typically applies to firms performing reviews and compilations under SSARS.
Reviews are conducted through PRIMA, the AICPA’s online peer review platform, administered in California by CalCPA.
